Knitting Confessions #1

As I was reading a few blogs I came across Stitched Up in Toronto's Knitting Confessions and thought of the perfect first Knitting Confession and had to share it with you.

So quite a while ago I discovered Hunter Hammersen's sock patterns and decided that I'd like to knit some pretty, lacy socks. After many hours of trawling through the patterns and photos I decided on Gramercy. Now I had only knit one pair of socks before I embarked on this project and they came out fine without swatching, so I decided, in my vast sock-knitting wisdom, that I didn't need to swatch for these either. Do you see where I'm going with this?!

Happily I knitted away on them, really enjoying the stitch pattern and liking how they looked on. It took a while but I eventually finished the first one and cast on for the second one almost immediately. After putting them on for the first time I had this niggling feeling that I ignored for quite some time.

Each time I wore those socks that annoying little niggling feeling, telling me something was not quite right, kept coming back. I ignored it for a little while but eventually I had to admit to myself that the socks were

a) baggy around the ankle
b) too long in the foot and
c) different lengths in the leg due to an extra pattern repeat on one of them.

Brilliant....!

Having finally, reluctantly accepted all of these errors I cast them aside and they sat at the bottom of the cupboard, unloved and unworn, for quite some time. Perhaps they could have been gifted to someone with bigger feet than me but there they sat...until I had to pack to move to Jakarta....when....I threw them in the bin. I didn't even unwind the yarn to reuse guys!! I just casually threw them away as if I hadn't spent hours and hours and hours working on them. Oh the shame!

Sadly I have no photos to share with you as I believe I deleted the ravelry project and the photos of the socks so you'll just have to imagine them...not that you should!

So if you have a knitting confession to make hop on over to Stitched Up in Toronto and share it!

  1. Oh my goodness! I've casually thrown knitting away too, but it was only a tiny project in cheap yarn that I hadn't touched in a year and a half. There's just something about packing up to move to a new place that sets you free and gives you permission to leave or toss what you don't need, isn't there?

    1. I'm glad I'm not the only one! Yes, I think it was the moving that made me feel it was OK to do. Also I'm realistic enough to know that I wouldn't have done anything with them! The yarn was sale yarn so I didn't really feel bad about that, however I'm not usually so wasteful! C'est la vie!

  2. Aww, poor, sad socks. But moving is stressful and there are times when you just want to throw everything you own away so you don't have to deal with it, so a forgotten pair of socks can easily be forgiven. Hope you've had better luck with socks since! And thanks for joining my link up. I look forward to reading your blog.

    1. Yes, the move was quite stressful but we're here now and it is all going well. I've had much better luck with socks since! I haven't tried any lacy ones again though.
